About Solar Backup Guide

Backup power has to work on the worst night of the year. We hold it to that standard.

Spec sheets are written in climate-controlled rooms. Outages happen in heat waves, ice storms, and the middle of the night, when a CPAP machine, a refrigerator, or a well pump is depending on the battery you chose. Solar Backup Guide exists to close the gap between what manufacturers claim and what their equipment actually delivers.

Why independent evaluation matters

Off-grid and emergency power is a category where small technical details carry large consequences. Two power stations with the same advertised watt-hour rating can deliver very different usable energy once inverter losses, heat, and low-voltage cutoffs are accounted for. An inverter that hums along with a phone charger may behave very differently under a motor-start surge or a sensitive medical device.

Battery chemistry adds another layer. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells are widely marketed for long cycle life and thermal stability, but real-world performance still depends on cell quality, battery-management design, and how the pack handles sustained heavy loads and temperature extremes.

Our job is to examine those differences closely, publish what we find in plain language, and tell you when a product isn't worth your money, including products we earn commissions on.

Our Evaluation Framework

Four pillars. Every product. Same protocol.

Every power station, generator, and solar kit we cover is assessed against the same four-part framework, so results are comparable across brands, price points, and capacities.

Where we are today: Solar Backup Guide launched in 2026. Our current reviews are research-based, built on manufacturer specifications, documentation, pricing, and public customer feedback, and each one is labeled that way. The procedures below are the hands-on protocol each product goes through as we acquire units for testing.

Pillar 01

Battery Lifecycle & Heat Dissipation

We drain each unit under sustained heavy resistive loads and record delivered watt-hours against the rated capacity. Surface and vent temperatures are logged throughout to see how the battery and inverter manage heat, and whether output throttles or shuts down before the battery is actually depleted.

We measure
Usable Wh vs. rated Wh
We watch for
Thermal throttling, early cutoff

Pillar 02

Inverter Waveform Purity

We capture AC output on an oscilloscope at idle, under steady load, and during surge events to check how closely each inverter tracks a clean sine wave. We pay particular attention to the loads where it matters most: CPAP machines and sensitive microelectronics.

We measure
Waveform shape, voltage stability
We watch for
Distortion under surge

We do not provide medical advice. Confirm power requirements for any medical device with its manufacturer.

Pillar 03

Real-World Solar Recharging

Lab ratings assume ideal sunlight. We pair each system with its intended panels outdoors, log measured solar irradiance alongside actual charge input, and compare real recharge times with what the manufacturer advertises.

We measure
Input watts vs. irradiance
We watch for
Gap between claim and reality

Pillar 04

Cold-Crank & Extreme Weather Readiness

Outages cluster around severe weather. We evaluate charging and discharge behavior across a range of roughly −10 °C to 45 °C (14 °F to 113 °F), noting where battery protection limits charging, reduces output, or prevents start-up.

We measure
Output across temperature range
We watch for
Charge lockouts, capacity loss

Editorial Integrity

Our independence policy

These commitments apply to every review, ranking, and buying guide we publish.

  1. Scores cannot be bought.

No manufacturer, retailer, or affiliate network can pay for a higher score, a better position, or a favorable verdict.

  2. No sponsored rankings.

We do not sell placement in our Best Picks lists. If we ever publish sponsored content, it will be clearly labeled and kept out of our rankings.

  3. Commissions don't decide recommendations.

We earn affiliate commissions from some retailers. Whether a product has an affiliate program, and how much it pays, has no bearing on our test results or verdicts. We recommend products without affiliate programs when they are the better choice.

  4. Objective, repeatable protocols.

Every product in a category goes through the same documented procedure. When we change a protocol, we note it on our Methodology page.

  5. Disclosure of review units.

We state in each review whether we purchased the product ourselves or received it from the manufacturer. Loaned or gifted units receive no special treatment.

  6. Corrections, in public.

If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the correction on the page. See our corrections and updates log. Report an error at corrections@solarbackupguide.org.
